The headline change is straightforward: ESL One Birmingham 2026 will feature 16 teams, four more than previous editions. Getting there was anything but simple. With the Birmingham venue locking ESL into a three-day main event window, the Tournament Management Team had to find a format that could accommodate 16 teams without sacrificing competitive integrity. The solution was clean and elegant: expand the group stage by a single day. From there, the Operations Team handled venue space and catering for the additional squads, while the Travel Team worked through hotel availability and flight logistics for every new participant.
The Closed Qualifiers have already concluded, meaning the 16-team field is taking shape ahead of the March event.
Alongside the expanded field, ESL confirmed that DreamHack Birmingham will serve as the expo area for the event. Every fan who purchases an ESL One ticket will receive full access to DreamHack for the entire weekend, adding significant value to attendance beyond the main stage competition.
Scaling to 16 teams amplifies one of the most persistent logistical challenges in international esports: visas. ESL outlined a comprehensive support process to give players the best possible chance of making it to Birmingham. That support includes personal invitation letters for each player, advance hotel and flight bookings, detailed event itineraries, additional supporting documents from the host city where available, and outreach to local embassies and consulates to help expedite appointments. In cases where visa issues cannot be resolved at all, ESL also ensures that potential replacement teams have begun their own visa processes, minimizing the risk of gaps in the field.
Critically, ESL began reaching out to qualifying contenders before the qualifier stage even started, targeting teams likely to both qualify and require visas. This proactive approach reduces last-minute scrambles and gives players the maximum window to get their documentation in order.
The harder challenge, ESL acknowledged, comes after teams arrive. Eliminated teams face an uncomfortable reality: returning to an arena where thousands of fans are cheering for opponents who knocked them out. ESL's answer is to book hotel rooms and practice facilities for all 16 teams for the full duration of the event, regardless of results. All squads have been encouraged to attend for fan meet-and-greets and activations, keeping the human element of the tournament alive even after a team's competitive run ends.
With 16 teams competing across an expanded format, there will be more matches to track than ever before.
